The software can be downloaded FREE by following the 'Computer Requirements' link. There is no reason to purchase any additional software for this course. 	PURPOSE STATEMENT


	Online Genetics & Your Practice provides a means of disseminating medical genetics education to health care and social services providers worldwide. Genetics & Your Practice is designed to help providers in four ways: Use basic knowledge in human and medical genetics to evaluate and treat patients and/or families who have or who are at risk of developing a genetic condition. Identify patients and/or families who could benefit from genetic services. Access referrals, testing, diagnosis,and interventions for affected patients and/or families. Address the financial, ethical, legal,and social issues inherent in the practice of genetic medicine. With this interactive web site, providers will be able to: Learn the latest information about medical genetics and related technologies. Progress at a comfortable pace with the web site's asynchronous, independent study format. Discover ways to integrate the information into their practice. Connect to online information and referral sources that could help in the coordination of services needed by patients and families. Benefit from real case studies and expert insights. Earn continuing education credit, CMEs or CEUs.

	A BRIEF HISTORY OF GENETICS & YOUR PRACTICE

Genetics & Your Practice began in 1994 as a collaborative effort involving the Washington State Department of Health, the Washington Chapter of the March of Dimes, Swedish Hospital and Medical Center (Seattle), and genetic health care providers from throughout Washington State. More than 3,500 primary care providers in Washington State and 1500 others from 12 other states have participated in Genetics& Your Practice since its inception.

Genetics & Your Practice has been funded by grants from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA Project#MCJ-531004), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), and the March of Dimes. Over the past several years, the Genetics & Your Practice curriculum has been updated several times and, with help from staff from the Institute for Child Health Policy, University of Florida, it has been converted into an interactive CD-ROM format (HRSA Project#MCJ-127413). The CD-ROM can be obtained from the March of Dimes (call 1-800-367-6630, use order number 09-1177-99). Recently, the March of Dimes has joined with the Idaho State University Departments of Nursing and Continuing Education/Special Programs to convert the G&YP CD-ROM into an online, classroom-based curriculum, with the assistance of a grant from the Idaho State Board of Education.


	DEDICATION


	We dedicate this online version of Genetics & Your Practice to the memory of our friend and colleague, Professor Roger R. Williams. Roger died tragically at the age of 54 in the crash of Swissair Flight 111, off the coast of Nova Scotia, on September 2, 1998. Roger Williams was born in Ogden, Utah, on August 11, 1944, to Howell and Grace Williams. After graduating from Ogden High School in 1962, he served a two and a half year mission in Germany for the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints. In 1968, Roger graduated from Weber State College and married Linda Gygi, his beloved wife of 30 years. Roger received his M.D. degree from the University of Utah in 1971, and then performed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center, followed by post-doctoral training at the National Cancer Institute and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. In 1976, Roger returned to the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah. Over a career that spanned almost 25 years, he authored or co-authored more than 200 professional publications, taught at universities throughout the world, and was an extremely successful grant writer. Throughout his life, Roger was the recipient of numerous awards for his scientific and humanitarian achievements. Roger was the founder and director of the University of Utah Cardiovascular Genetics Research Clinic and he served on many state, national and international committees for both public and private organizations. He was on his way to Geneva, Switzerland, to conduct a meeting with the World Health Organization when he died. He had a tremendous zest for life and for the many good deeds he performed. He was a very fine pianist and an avid sports fan. He is survived by his wife and seven children, who he frequently and fondly referred to as his "most important accomplishment and responsibility." Roger was brilliant, dynamic, enthusiastic, kind and hard working. In other words, he was truly a mensch - a complete person. May his memory and legacy be a blessing to all who knew him. He will surely be missed.
